Federal presidential election1992
At the federal presidential election of 26 April 1992, the FPÖ nominated Heide Schmidt as its candidate. In the first ballot, she obtained 16.39 per cent, which amounted to about 760,000 votes.
The ÖVP’s Thomas Klestil was later able to defeat SPÖ candidate Rudolf Streicher in the run-off election.
Brief description of the election campaign and its outcome
Once it had been decided that Kurt Waldheim was no longer standing for re-election, the candidates for the federal presidency were Thomas Klestil for the ÖVP and Rudolf Streicher for the SPÖ.
