European Parliament election 2019
At the European Parliament election of 26 May 2019, Harald Vilimsky stood as the FPÖ’s lead candidate. The FPÖ achieved 17.2 per cent (-2.52 percentage points) and three seats (-1).
The winner of the election was the ÖVP, which recorded a clear increase, while the SPÖ, Greens and NEOS stagnated
Brief description of the election campaign
The so-called Ibiza scandal broke shortly before the 2019 European Parliament election, which made the circumstances surrounding the FPÖ’s entry into that election campaign challenging. As in 2014, the Freedom Party’s lead candidate was Harald Vilimsky, but FPÖ Federal Party Chairman Heinz-Christian Strache also appeared on campaign posters. The party’s central slogans included “Das schützen, was wir lieben: Österreich” (“Protect what we love: Austria”) and in the final phase of the election campaign, it added “Jetzt erst recht – FPÖ” (“Now more than ever: FPÖ”).

Election result and impact
Notwithstanding the Ibiza scandal, the FPÖ suffered relatively modest losses. The Freedom Party’s partner parties were strengthened right across the rest of the European Union, which resulted in an enlargement of their Group within the European Parliament. Harald Vilimsky, Roman Haider and Georg Mayer became MEPs.
