Rhetoric: Fundamentals of Communication – Basic Knowledge for Politicians

From October 11 to 12, a two-day seminar on the topic “Fundamentals of Communication” took place in Salzburg under the direction of trainer Dietmar Heuritsch.

The program covered key techniques of effective speaking and conversation, particularly the structure of political speeches, the deliberate use of voice, language, and body language, as well as dealing with spontaneous speaking situations and provocation.

In addition to theoretical foundations, the focus was on hands-on exercises that enabled participants to enhance their personal presence and expressiveness. The seminar also addressed topics such as appropriate demeanor and contemporary manners, as well as the importance of a confident appearance for various occasions. Special attention was given to audience-oriented and positive communication — for instance, avoiding formulaic or overly “politician-like” expressions — to active listening, and to self-motivation in political everyday life.

Through individual video training sessions with personalized analysis, participants received feedback on their performance and concrete suggestions for further developing their rhetorical skills. By combining theoretical insights, practical tools, and targeted exercises for confident and persuasive public communication, the training aimed to qualify politically active citizens and professionalize local political engagement.
